Cook, Waiter, Deliverer – Pizza Hut – Wimberley, TX – 2001 to 2002

I began working at the Pizza Hut in Wimberley from about July or August 2001 to about November 2001. I then left to focus on school and returned about March 2002 and continued working there until about November of 2002.

While working as a Cook at Pizza Hut I was responsible for:

  • Working with the Manage to maintain inventory of food supplies.
  • Creating and Cooking orders to customer specifications.
  • Maintaining the cooking area and keeping the kitchen clean.
  • Washing dishes and stocking the salad bar.
  • Taking customer orders.

As a Cook I learned the following skills

  • Managing customer orders.
  • Working in a fast paced environment.
  • Correcting errors and working with customer complaints.
  • Maintaining Inventory
  • Communications
  • Team work with my fellow employees
  • Responsibility and Flexibility

After performing well as a Cook, my manager decided to utilize me as a Deliverer as well to see how I might handle the work load. As a Deliverer, I was responsible for the following:

  • Taking customer orders over the phone and in the restaurant.
  • Organizing orders, developing delivery routes, and the timely delivery of orders to customers.
  • Checking orders and working with the cooks to ensure orders were made correctly.
  • Working directly with customers to resolve any issues and handling conflicts independent form supervision.

While working as a Deliverer, I learned the following skills.

  • Customer Relations
  • Communication Skills
  • Order management
  • Working Deliveries
  • Team Work
  • Conflict management

After working as a delivery boy, the Pizza Hut I worked out became short staffed, so in addition to cooking and delivering pizzas, I was also assigned the duties of a waiter. While a waiter, my responsibilities included.

  • Taking customer orders at the tables, register, and over the phone.
  • Working with the cooks to ensure orders are made correctly.
  • Serving the food to the customer.
  • Frequently checking on customers to ensure they are satisfied with their meal and meeting their needs as required.
  • Handling conflicts with customers.
  • Working with the deliverers in preparing their orders for them to pick up and take out on the next run.

I learned the following skills as a waiter:

  • Customer Service
  • Communication Skills
  • Conflict management
  • Order Management
  • Working a Register
  • Team Work
  • Responsibility and Flexibility.

While working at the Pizza Hut, I learned a great deal about working in a fast paced working environment. We were the only pizza place in town that worked deliveries and had great prices. Friday and Saturday nights were always extremely busy. I would take customer orders, make those orders, pack them up, deliver them, take other orders, serve tables, clean tables, maintain the kitchen, and then go on another delivery. The manager had me working all of these different roles at the same time on many nights.

I learned how to be flexible, how to take on many roles, manage my time appropriately, organize my tasks, and make the Pizza Hut in Wimberley maintain an excellent reputation for satisfying customers and having pizzas delivered on time. Though the work was stressful, I learned a great deal and gained significant skills in communication and team work.
