The Meritorious Mast is another means for Commanding Officers to give commendations to enlisted personal for exemplary performance that warrants positive remarks and award for performance. This is not a combat related award, it is merely a means to give recognition to solid performance.
I was honored with this award by a great commanding officer prior to our deployment to Iraq when I was with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines, Bravo Company back in 2004.
I was the platoon radio operator for 2nd Platoon. This position is billeted for a Sergeant. I volunteered to take this position as a Private First Class. No one really wanted to take the position due to the responsibility but also the weight of carrying around the platoon radio everywhere. I was able to maintain comms during a Battalion training operation that led to our Company being the only officially “SOC” qualified company in the battalion. NOT due to my actions, the company’s performance as a whole did that.
I was just recognized by my platoon commander and company commander for maintaining continuous comms with the company. Technically I was the only platoon radio operator who kept comms with the company commander during the operation throughout the bulk majority of it. Feel free to review the citation on the award to get all the details.
It was an honor to serve with the men of this company. I always remember them with great fondness, and I miss them all greatly. You will never find a tighter company of Raiders. I still look back to our time in Fallujah with great respect for the amazing performance of Bravo Company. It was an honor to be but only a small part of that great group of warriors.
